What happened
Claude Opus 5 is available across all Anthropic platforms as of July 24, 2026: the Claude apps, Claude Code, and the API, at the same price as Opus 4.8. Anthropic describes it as delivering Fable 5-level intelligence at roughly one-third the cost. The claim is not marketing. The numbers hold up.
On Frontier-Bench v0.1, Claude Opus 5 beats every other model and more than doubles Opus 4.8 performance, with lower cost per task. On CursorBench 3.2, it lands 0.5 percentage points from Fable 5's peak while delivering that result at half the cost per task. On ARC-AGI-3, the benchmark for solving novel problems, it scored 30.2%. That is three times the runner-up. On GDPval-AA, a new state of the art. On Zapier AutomationBench, Claude Opus 5's approval rate is roughly 1.5 times the next best model at the same cost per task. On OSWorld 2.0, the computer use benchmark, Claude Opus 5 beats every model at any price tier. It outperforms Fable 5's best result at roughly one-third the cost.
One more number. The 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026): Claude Opus 5 scored 42 out of 42, per Anthropic. The gold medal threshold was 29.
In life sciences, Claude Opus 5 beats Opus 4.8 across all of Anthropic's internal evaluations. Organic chemistry: +10.2 percentage points. Protein function prediction from sequence: +7.7 percentage points.
Anthropic also announced two beta features. Mid-conversation tool changes preserve the prompt cache on the Claude Platform. Automatic API fallbacks route requests blocked by Claude Opus 5's safety classifiers to another model automatically.
On alignment, Claude Opus 5 scored 2.3 on Anthropic's automated behavioral audit of misaligned behavior. It is the lowest score among all recent Anthropic models. On cybersecurity, Claude Opus 5 matches Mythos 5 at identifying vulnerabilities but trails significantly on exploit writing. On Anthropic's OSS-Fuzz benchmark, Claude Opus 5 finds bugs at a rate comparable to Mythos 5 and produces exploits at a materially lower effectiveness rate.

The implication for the CFO is direct. An operation spending $100,000 per month on tokens with a frontier model can, by migrating to Claude Opus 5, cut the inference bill by up to two-thirds with no measurable quality loss on coding, knowledge work, and agentic tasks.
